Entry 4: Class Reflection Hello everyone! Welcome to my Blog entry #4. There is so much that I learned from this course throughout the semester! First, I have learned that is very important for teachers to obtain a multicultural perspective when working with a variety of students in a classroom. Not every child is the same and teachers need to be able to identify the variety within English Language learners. Before we started reading our textbook, I was familiar with the terms like “emergent bilinguals” and “newcomer ELL students”. However, now I have learned to identify different English Language Learners such as, simultaneous bilingualism, sequential bilingualism, language minority students, language majority students, and heritage language students (Wright, 2015). Entry 3: ELL Teacher Interview Hello everyone! Welcome to my Blog entry #3, where I interviewed Ms. Valdez, who teaches the 4 th grade in a bilingual classroom. It was a pleasure to hear Ms. Valdez perspective in the knowledge she has while working with ELL students. I asked Ms. Valdez a few questions and some of her answers really stood up since I could correlated her answers with what we are learning in our classroom. One answer that really stood up for me was the methods Ms. Valdez use in the classroom to help English Language Learners learn English. Ms. Valdez explained how she uses cooperative learning in the classroom and let peers “work together to complete a task.” I found this interesting because from what I have learned from our class, “Cooperative learning focuses on the use of small groups within which students collaborate to solve problems or complete academic tasks” (Wright, 2015, p. 63). Entry 2: Interview with ELL student Hello everyone! Welcome to my Blog entry #2, where I interviewed my friend Rosa who came to the United States at a very young age. Rosa learned English as a second language when she started elementary school. I asked Rosa a few questions and some of her answers really stood up since I could correlated to scholar’s opinions on the matter. The first question I asked, “Was it easy or difficult for you to learned English as a second language in school?” Rosa immediately, replied, “Difficult.” Then she proceeded to explain that she found it difficult to learned English because she will only speak Spanish at home and had to learn English when she started school. Rosa explained that she spoke fluently Spanish with all her relatives at home, but at school she was quite because she will only know how to say “Hi” and “Bye” in English.
